Our second flight from Istanbul to Bangkok was long and uneventful. There was a very early snow storm in Istanbul that caused some major flight delays, so I guess we were lucky that our delay was only two hours. The Istanbul airport makes OHare look like the Palwaukee airport. It's huge and unbelievably densely populated.
First impression of Bangkok as we left the airport - it looks like California, with lots of palm trees lining streets with large buildings and lots of traffic. First new fact that we learned - the driver sits on the right of the car and they drive on the left, like in Britain.
We are both a little foggy from the long trip, so we will rest for a while, check out the complimentary high tea in the concierge lounge and then take a walk to get our bearings about the location of the Skytrain, shopping areas and street food. We will be ready for a full day of sightseeing tomorrow.
Back from a walk through the city near our hotel, we were struck by the Buddhist temples tucked between high end designer stores. We were also surprised at the prevalence of Christmas trees and Christmas carols throughout the hotel and the shopping centers - this is a Buddhist country.
Here is proof that we are in Bangkok.
